A Form of Lectio Divina

Jean-Jacques OLIER, pastor of the Church of Saint-Sulpice (1642-1652) and founder of the Sulpicians, was known as a profound spiritual leader. He was greatly preoccupied with the spiritual welfare of his parishioners, as well as with the seminarians that he began to form when he founded Séminaire Saint-Sulpice.

Part of this Sulpician tradition involves a special prayer form that has become known as “the prayer of Father Olier.” It is a type of Sulpician meditation or a form of lectio divina (prayerful reading of Scripture), and recent decades have seen a growth in interest in this prayer. Sulpician seminaries around the world also practice it. Its simplicity is one of its most attractive aspects. Its simple, three-step process of meditation draws one into an experience of the risen Christ Jesus, in order to be transformed by Him and become more and more like Him. The method works well either individually or in a group.

The attached two-page document in PDF format offers a convenient summary of this prayer form. It can be printed out or freely shared for personal (but not commercial) use, respecting that it is the property of the Generalate of the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice.
