Meeting in Ottawa in advance of the upcoming synod of bishops on the family, the Bishops of Canada (CCCB) have elected new leadership.
Most Reverend Douglas CROSBY, O.M.I., Bishop of Hamilton (Ontario) was elected President. A Sulpician, Mgr Lionel GENDRON, PSS, was elected Vice President.
Bishop Gendron, who has been Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil since 2010, was born in Saint-Quentin, New Brunswick in 1944. After studying theology at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal, he was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1969, and then joined the Society of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice (Sulpicians). Later he served as Rector of the Grand Séminaire de Montréal and as Provincial Superior of the Canadian Province of the Sulpicians (1994-2006), a position he held until his nomination as Auxiliary Bishop of Montréal in 2006.
